The basic thrust of our work concerns the nature and origin of the crustal dichotomy, the number, distribution, and effects of major impact basins, and the timing and effectiveness of early resurfacing events. These three areas are interconnected. The original crustal dichotomy is almost certainly related to large impact basins but shows clear evidence of subsequent modification (probably by endogenic processes). These modifications have enhanced the original dichotomy and led to generally high-standing older crust and lower lying younger crust. Likewise, volcanic resurfacing has been an important part of the modification of the crustal dichotomy boundary zone and timing of volcanic resurfacing events may be related to the occurrence of large impacts.
