RESEARCH
AREA EXPERIENCE:
Neotectonics,
Natural Hazards, Vegetation Canopy Structure, Water Storage and Discharge,
Laser Altimetry
CURRENT
ACTIVITIES:
Dr. David Harding conducts research in the measurement and analysis of neotectonic landforms, vegetation canopies and continental water storage and discharge, in particular by utilizing advanced airborne and space-based laser altimeter systems. He is principal investigator for a NASA Instrument Incubator Program project, "Push-Broom Laser Altimeter Demonstration for Space-Based Cryospheric Topographic and Surface Property Mapping." The airborne instrument being developed in the IIP project, the Swath Imaging Multi-polarization Photon-Counting Lidar (SIMPL), will demonstrate techniques enabling more capable spaceflight laser altimeters for future Earth science and planetary exploration missions. Harding is a founding member of, and represents NASA in, the Puget Sound Lidar Consortium, (PSLC) which is mapping active fault zones and volcanoes in the Puget Sound region and Cascades Range, WA. This is accomplished using high-resolution, airborne scanning laser altimeter mapping that detects geomorphic signatures of active faults, landslides, and lahar flows hidden beneath dense vegetation cover. He is a member of the Ice, Clouds and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) science team, conducting research in on-land snow depth retrievals using ICESat. He also chaired the ICESat Precision Range Determination working group that is responsible for defining and validating algorithms for the altimeter channel data products acquired using that mission's instrument, the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS). He is also a principal investigator in NASA's Terrestrial Hydrology Program, using ICESat data to establish design constraints and measurement requirements for future laser altimeter mission observations of inland water storage and discharge.
Space-based topographic
mapping and change detection concept using laser altimeter swath images
overlapped along-track. Base image
is topographic shaded relief representation of Mount St. Helens, WA volcanic
crater at 2 m spatial resolution acquired for the Puget Sound Lidar Consortium
using airborne laser swath mapping (ALSM). One-year elevation change (from ALSM
conducted in Oct. 2003 and Nov. 2004) is shown in area of overlap between prior
(purple) and later (red) swaths, revealing elevation change due to rock glacier
advance (1), volcanic venting (3) and dome growth (4), and thickening of the
crater glacier (5). No significant elevation change was detected on the old
(1980's) volcanic dome (2) or crater wall (6).
