Abstract

The possibility of using the gradient method to measure anomalous magnetic fields was examinedin [1] and the conditions for the determintaion of the optimum base of a gradient meter in the measurement of the gradientof the total anomalous geomagnetic field were obtained in [2]. Here we investigate the optimum selection of the base of a gradient meter deigned for measuring the local component of the anomalous geomagnetic field. This kind of problem is frequently encountered in practical exploration of the anomalous geomagnetic field. This kind of problem is freuquently encountered in practical exploration geophysics (search for bauxite deposits) and in investigations of the structure of the ocean floor (determination of the fine structure of the magnetic anomalies above mid-ocean ridges).
